Quick thoughts. Short observations. The non-essays.

Earlier this year, I had the idea of bringing my YouTube channel back to life. It mainly came from wanting to start Project Argus after Project Blackwall. The main reason behind this was that Project Argus was going to have significantly more scope than Blackwall, and a post-mortem write-up would likely dwarf the already high word count of the Blackwall write-up.

I have had this idea many times before, and never done anything with it, but this time round it felt more serious. Nothing much came of it, mainly due to my already poor work-life balance. I now have a new job, however, and that caused the idea to come out of deep freeze again. You see, with me getting this new 9-5, I strictly speaking have less free time, but I do have more energy. This opens me up to expand my learning, and with that I want to learn more about electronics.

I know I want a new 3D printer, and after following a pretty cohesive rabbit hole, I know I want a Voron. Specifically, I want a Voron 2.4 6-head Stealthburner with a BoxTurle AMS system. I’ll start with a Voron 2.4 LDO kit, however. This project is for me ambitious at best, and I know that just writing a block post of it wont do it justice. Thus, resurrecting the YouTube channel makes sense.

Am I actually going to do it? I hope so, but as good as I am at coming up with ideas, I am equally skilled at not following through on these ideas. I would like to start it, and I have budgeted for a mic and figured out (most of) the tooling. It is just the case that I am going to have to move out of the planning phase.

Since I left Arch, I have had this semi-constant pull between Gentoo and NixOS. I ended up settling on NixOS because it seemed to be the sane option given the issues I had with Arch, that being I wanted an easy way to rebuild my system with minimal effort when it inevitably bonked itself. However, as I learn more and more about Gentoo (and get more and more frustrated with the NixOS community), the more I want to distro hop again. I know the long-term plan is to make NixOS my OS of choice for my VMs, and this remains the same… but…

Since I’m moving into a role where I code as my BAU rather than just on pet projects, I want to make a concerted effort to make Vim (or Neovim) my main editor. I thought about how I could make this into a post, as realistically I will want to set up my Neovim config declaratively using Nix or Home Manager. Ended up thinking of a funny idea: rather than having AAS (As a Service), I might coin the idea of AAL (As a LARP). Opens itself up for all sorts of funny acronyms

  • TEAAL - Text Editor as a LARP for die-hard vim users
  • OSAAL - Operating System As A LARP for when people deliberately choose the try-hard OS like Gentoo or BSD

Currently letting this idea marinate, but I think it has some potential.

Hi! This is my first dispatch.

The section exists because long-form blog posts are the wrong shape for the things I think about but never quite turn into a post - the half-formed observations, the thing I learned while fixing something else, the quiet refactor of a position I held for years.

Posts are the long answer to a question. Dispatches are the question itself, posted before I have the answer.
